IMO・ ballast water management regulation on ballast water analysis has started.
Have you heard ?
Sampling and analysis should be conducted at the commissioning test if the survey, including verification of BWMS installation
, is completed on or after 1st June 2022, regardless of flags.
What is the commissioning test ?
On board tests with Class surveyors are required in order to issue International Ballast Water Management Certificate (IBWMC)
issuing the certificate requires the 3 items below.
①Confirmation of the Type Approval Certificate of BWTS.
②Confirmation of BWTS operation after installation of BWTS.
③Sampling analysis during the commissioning test.
We engage with IMO・ ballast water management regulation on ballast water analysis because we schedule our engineers to board and conduct the sampling.
This is done in order to fulfill the requirement of the NO.3 item.
Which ship are affected ?
The vessels subject to IMO・ ballast water management regulation on ballast water analysis is as follows.
All ships of 400 gross tonnage and above.
Newly built ships on and after 1st of June, 2022 and the existing ships which are BWTS retrofitted, regardless of the flag.
All vessels corresponding to A and B.
Background of IMO・ ballast water management regulation on ballast water analysis
How did the IMO・ ballast water management regulation on ballast water analysis start ?
“The International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004” (Ballast Water Management Convention) was adopted in 2004 And, the BWM Convention started on 8 September 2017. This is called Ballast water management regulation.
These regulations are applied to all ships of 400 gross tonnage and above and the ballast water management has become mandatory for all existing ships.
Accordingly, D1 regulation or D2 regulation is required to be conducted.
D1 regulation and D2 regulation
D1 regulation : the Ballast water exchange standard.
The ballast water exchange of the ship' s tanks must occur at a minimum of 200 nautical miles from shore
and at a water depth more than that of 200m of seawater.
D2 regulation : the Ballast water performance standard.
The Approved BWTS is required to be installed onboard all existing ships.
Following the above mentioned regulations, with the aim of protecting the marine environment from the transfer of harmful aquatic organisms in ballast water carried by ships, ship's ballast water will be managed internationally, taking the methods to biocide/inactivate harmful aquatic life and pathogen in the ballast water.
IMO future trend
BWTS is required to be installed onboard all existing ships by 8th Sep., 2024, according to the Marine Environment Protection Committee agreement.
